Our History
Nalanda College Science Society (NCSS) is one of the most prominent, dynamic, and rapidly evolving societies within the school. Recognized as one of the largest student based, it continues to play a vital role in shaping the academic and intellectual culture of Nalanda College.
Established on 17th July 1956, the society has now proudly completed nearly 70 years of excellence. From its inception to the present day, NCSS has consistently remained one of the most renowned and influential societies in the school, rendering outstanding service not only to Nalanda College but also to the nation and the global community.
With a membership that once exceeded 300 students from the Grade 12 and 13 sections, the society marked a historic milestone during the 2025/2026 term. For the first time in its history, membership was extended to students from Grades 6 to 11. This groundbreaking initiative significantly expanded the society’s reach, increasing its membership to over 500 students. As a result, NCSS was able to engage junior members by organizing educational lectures and activities, marking a golden chapter in the society’s legacy.
Over the decades, NCSS has nurtured generations of exceptional individuals, including renowned scientists, innovators, entrepreneurs, leaders, and professionals across diverse fields. These individuals have quenched their thirst for knowledge at the golden fountain of NCSS, carrying its legacy forward with distinction.
The society has also achieved remarkable recognition at both national and international levels. A notable example is Rakitha Malewana, former President of NCSS (2012–2013), whose research on medication for the HIV/AIDS virus earned a gold medal at the Young Scientist’s Olympiad. In addition, Gayanga Chathushan Kuruppu, a past student, secured a silver medal at the I-SWEEEP Olympiad held in Texas, USA, for developing an Android application capable of detecting early warning signs of health deterioration. Furthermore, Rakindu Wickramarathne brought honor to the society by winning a silver medal at the Young Scientist Conference held in Germany for his innovative research.
Inspired by the vision of the Vice President (2025/2026), another historic initiative was introduced in November 2024, the launch of a monthly science e-magazine. This publication provides science enthusiasts with insightful and high quality articles, serving as a platform for knowledge sharing and intellectual growth. Notably, it stands as the only school science magazine that is open to contributions from students of other schools and universities, further elevating its significance. This initiative has become yet another golden milestone in the history of NCSS.
Furthermore, the past year witnessed the highest number of projects conducted by a NCSS in recent times, reflecting the dedication and commitment of its members. These initiatives significantly enhanced the society’s visibility and popularity within the school, strengthening its position as a leading student organization.
Nalanda College Science Society has always served as a nurturing ground for curious and innovative minds. Throughout their academic journey, it stands as a guiding force an illuminating presence within Mother Nalanda empowering students to become future pioneers in science and beyond.
